You already sent money — do this now

Work through these steps in order. If you are being threatened and feel unsafe, call 911 first.

1.Stop all contact and payments

Do not send one more dollar, even to 'release' what you were promised. Block the accounts, but take screenshots of everything first — messages, profiles, payment receipts and phone numbers.

2.Call your bank or payment provider immediately

Use the number on the back of your card. Ask about recalling an e-transfer, reversing a card payment or freezing the account. Speed matters most in the first hours.

3.Report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre

Call 1-888-495-8501 or file online at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca. Reports feed national investigations even when your money cannot be recovered.

4.Report to your local police

Ask for a police file number. You will need it for your bank, your insurer and any credit dispute.

5.Protect your identity if you sent documents

If you shared ID, a SIN or banking details, contact Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada and ask for a fraud alert on your credit file.

6.Talk to someone

Being scammed is not a reason for shame — these operations target thousands of people with the same script. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 for the Suicide Crisis Helpline in Canada.
