The fees scammers invent

Reported cases in Canada follow the same ladder. Each payment is described as the last one.

• Registration or application fee

  Usually the first ask, often a modest amount so it feels safe to pay.

• Initiation or oath fee

  Presented as compulsory before a 'ceremony' that never takes place.

• Temple, altar or sacrifice fee

  Framed in spiritual language to make refusing feel dangerous.

• Ring, medallion or robe fee

  A physical item is promised so a courier charge can follow.

• Courier, customs or clearance fee

  The 'package' is always stuck somewhere that needs one more payment.

• Bank or transfer charge

  Claimed to be needed before your promised money can be released.

Why the payment method matters

E-transfers, gift card codes, cryptocurrency and wire services are chosen because they are hard to reverse and hard to trace. A legitimate organisation in Canada does not ask a stranger for any of them.
