Is the Illuminati real?

A society called the Illuminati did exist. It was founded in Bavaria in 1776 as an Enlightenment-era group of academics and officials, and it was banned and broken up by the Bavarian state within about a decade.

The modern version is folklore

The idea of a surviving, all-powerful Illuminati controlling banks, governments and celebrities comes from conspiracy literature and pop culture, not from evidence. There is no register, no headquarters, and no recruitment programme.

Who benefits from the myth

Fraudsters do. The myth lets them promise something unverifiable — wealth, protection, influence — and charge fees for access to it. Because the organisation does not exist, nothing they promised can ever be delivered or disputed.

If you want to join a real fraternal group

Genuine organisations in Canada, such as Masonic lodges and service clubs, publish their addresses, name their officers, meet you in person, and never promise money. Anyone messaging you privately with a payment link is not one of them.
